Iran Turkey Pistachio Export Race Heats Up in Global Market

Iran and Turkey Compete for Global Dominance in Pistachio Exports

Iran and Turkey, two major players in the global pistachio industry, play a significant role in the supply and export of this strategic crop. With a long history of pistachio cultivation and export, Iran remains one of the world’s largest producers and exporters, offering a wide variety of high-quality products that have earned it a strong position in international markets. In contrast, Turkey has gained substantial global market share through large-scale production in regions such as Şanlıurfa and Gaziantep, along with the implementation of modern marketing strategies and the expansion of its export markets.

Both countries, by utilizing their domestic resources and production capacities, are engaged in an intense competition to secure their positions and increase export revenues. This rivalry highlights not only the economic importance of pistachios as a high-value agricultural commodity but also the commercial potential both countries have in seizing global trade opportunities.

Export Surge in Recent Months

In recent months, Iran and Turkey have intensified their efforts to increase their share in the global pistachio market. Recent data shows that both nations, leveraging their production capacity and export strategies, are experiencing steady growth and expanding their presence in international markets.

Export Statistics Comparison

According to Keinia, quoting the Iran Pistachio Association, Iran exported 16,000 tons of various types of in-shell and shelled pistachios in Feb–Mar 2025. This figure marks a 45% increase compared to the same month the previous year. From the beginning of the harvest season in Sept–Oct to the end of Feb–Mar, Iran exported a total of 144,000 tons. Out of the 230,000 tons of initial stock, 21,000 tons were allocated for domestic consumption, and the remainder was designated for export.

Meanwhile, data from the Southeastern Anatolia Exporters Association shows that Turkey exported pistachios worth $59.76 million to 66 countries in the first quarter of 2025. In the year 2024, Turkey exported pistachios valued at $229.78 million to 96 countries. The top three export destinations were:

  • Italy – $18.55 million

  • Germany – $11.56 million

  • Kazakhstan – $3.58 million

These statistics indicate that both countries are on a trajectory of increasing their global pistachio market share through focused production and strategic market expansion.

Target Markets and Competitive Positioning

Iran primarily exports its pistachios to regional markets including the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, CIS countries, and the Indian subcontinent. This concentration suggests Iran holds a strong position in traditional markets; however, entry into European markets still requires new strategies and marketing approaches.

On the other hand, Turkey has secured a strong presence in European markets through exports to Italy and Germany, reflecting its capability to compete in more demanding international arenas. This success underlines Turkey’s ability to diversify its export destinations and produce goods meeting global standards.

While Iran continues to rely on its traditional regional markets, Turkey, with its focus on high-standard production in Şanlıurfa and Gaziantep and diversified export portfolio, has become a powerful contender in the global pistachio trade.

Export Outlook for Both Countries

At the end of Feb–Mar, Iran still held 65,000 tons of remaining stock, indicating strong potential for further exports. This remaining inventory represents a valuable opportunity for Iran to increase its global pistachio share. However, to break into more competitive markets like Europe, Iran must implement more precise planning, infrastructure improvements, and new marketing strategies.

Turkey, on the other hand, has demonstrated that market diversity is a key to success. By exporting to various regions and focusing on products that meet international standards, Turkey has strengthened its position in competitive markets like Europe. While Iran maintains a prominent presence in its regional markets, Turkey continues to reinforce its global standing through expanded reach and product quality.

This trend could further consolidate Turkey’s position in the global pistachio industry. Iran, too, must adopt new strategies to enhance its competitiveness and enter untapped global markets.

Final Note

The future prospects of these two pistachio giants depend heavily on their ability to explore new markets and enhance product quality. To remain competitive, Iran must prioritize development in new markets, particularly in Europe. Conversely, Turkey, by continuing its successful strategies of diversifying export destinations and maintaining international standards, is poised to strengthen its global position even further.

Ultimately, healthy competition between the two nations can drive growth in the pistachio sector and create broader commercial opportunities for both.
